The Legacy Media Doesn't Get It

They Really Don’t Understand

I read “An Open Letter “ written by University Of Oregon Journalism and Communications professors.

I will link it at the end of this and ask you to read it and tell me what you think.

It saddens me because they really don’t understand what folks like us have been telling them.

They talk of censorship and free speech but fail to understand that’s what we believe they have been doing to us.

The letter tells me arrogance or ignorance shows how out of touch they are with what many in the public are saying.

They blame rather than look inside.

As a former member of the journalism club I hoped at some point they would see the the other side and realize they are out of balance and doing exactly what they blame us for.

They lost what balance they had and instead became propagandists and the public relations arm for one ideology.

Journalism took a side and lost its way.

The legacy industry as it stands is dead.

They don’t understand they lost our trust.

It blows my mind to see how out of touch they are and this letter shows they just don’t get it.

I see new brands of legacy media popping up but doubt they can survive because they are the same thing, same supporters, different wrapper.

In the letter they talk of how important it is to have a media to report on what’s going on, to tell the truth.

I chuckle at the truth part.

We have that but they refuse to recognize the new direction information is being consumed.

The audience saw what the media did during the pandemic, we saw what they’ve done to people they consider “Right Wing” and we know they don’t play fair.

So in that respect, this letter is appalling to me.

A true journalist would do some soul searching, some research and listen to something other than the university echo chamber to get the rest of the story.

If they crawled down out of their ivory tower they’d see they’ve already been replaced.

The polls show people like you and me are using our voices not allowing an industry to set the tone or push an ideology.

It really is sad for them but good culturally.

We cannot rely on them but must do our own unbiased research.

Wonder what would happen if instead of this letter they had written one asking the public what it thinks.

What can journalists do better?

How can the industry regain our trust?

What did they do to lose our trust?

But that didn’t happen and tells us their heart is not to bring fairness and balance it’s to grab back what they can of an industry that is dead.

To truly want free speech and balanced reporting  would also require more listening, a desire to do better and a large dose of humility.
