“We Trusted” Luke 24:21

Trust is an interesting thing.
You either have it, or you don’t.
This is the verse headlined in my daily reading from “Streams in the Desert.”
What a perfect message from God.
I admit, I have trust issues, big time.
My wife lets things roll off her back, but I’m not like that.
I try, but when someone burns me, when someone lets me down, when the sacred trust bond is broken, it’s hard for me to overlook the infraction and pretend it didn’t happen.
The past tends to set the stage for our lives, and this is a huge rock I stumble over a lot.
When we put our trust in men/women, we are bound to be hurt.
I tend to be fairly literal.
It’s not a good or bad trait; it’s simply who I am.
Truth is another word that’s important to me.
Stretching the truth is still a lie.
In some ways, it’s worse because the liar is making excuses for poor actions.
This morning, I remind myself that I, too, let people down.
I’m as guilty as anyone of these things.
We are all human with a propensity to sin.
I understand circumstances change.
Promises made can end up being promises broken.
The world stage is fluid.
We can’t predict what will happen, and we should trust our leaders to do the right thing.
But I don’t.
And I’m to the point where I won’t.
I’ve seen too much, so have you.
I’m extremely disappointed in the direction our world is headed.
I thought truth and justice for all were becoming part of the American dream, again.
But instead, I’m witnessing human beings doing what they always do: choosing power over people.
We said America First, but didn’t read the fine print.
I now understand there are silent exceptions, and I don’t agree.
I really want America to be first.
I’m not saying don’t take care of others in the world, but before we go trying to fix someone else’s problems, perhaps, as the Word of God says, we should make sure our own house is in order.
Our house is in disarray.
Our people are suffering.
The corruption and fraud are undeniable.
But rather than turning our attention to these things, we attempt to police the world.
The moral of the story is place your trust in God alone.
Only He deserves our trust and our loyalty.
Give room for man to fail, fumble, and f-ck up, because God gives that same grace to us.
Oh, and pray for our leaders, our country, and the healing of our own souls.
We Trusted.
