It’s All In Your Head
I’m listening to a doctor who studies the brain talk about how people really can change their thought patterns by renewing their minds.
This is not a new concept to people who read their Bible.
Romans 12:2: "Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
But what does that mean?
I was lying in bed this morning as a few dark thoughts came to mind.
The voices tried to stir up the past, sprinkle in some insecurities, and remind me what a failure I am.
That verse I posted above came to mind.
I asked myself a couple of questions to clear my mind.
I had to confront my mind by asking, Am I really a failure, or did something just go wrong?
Is the whole world coming apart, or is this just a bump in the road?
When the voices of evil lie to us, they always sprinkle elements of truth into the lie.
They know us better than we know ourselves and use old patterns, worn-out messages, and what some like to call “little white lies” to suck us in.
Our brain is a powerful organ.
But it’s not always trustworthy.
It lies to us by making false assumptions out of seemingly innocent information.
According to the doctor I’m listening to, he says your brain will tell you all kinds of things that simply aren’t true.
That renewing of the mind principle is designed to create new, more positive patterns in your thought process, hence, renewing your mind.
You have the right and the responsibility to question every thought that comes into your brain.
Don’t stop with the question.
Capture the thought, find out where it’s coming from, and take it captive.
I’m not always successful at this renewal game.
It’s easier to follow comfortable patterns even if those patterns are destructive.
The internet makes it even harder.
Get up in the morning, say 15 minutes earlier, and spend time meditating, reading God’s word, reading a devotional, or just listening to God.
We can control our brains.
We don’t have to listen to the voices.
The problem with renewal is that it requires effort and time.
